Emma Bingham:
Current Position: Consultant and Lead for
endocrinology for Frimley Health, Surrey.
Interests and current work: I completed my research
in hypoglycaemia and brain glucose metabolism using PET
imaging with Stephanie Amiel. I am lead Endocrinologist for
Frimley Health with interests in antenatal diabetes,
diabetic foot care and transitional care and lead on many
quality improvement projects at our hospital including data
quality, IT, patient flow and supported discharge. I am a
member of the Kings pituitary MDT and a member of the KSS
STC..

Umesh Dashora
(News Editor, BJD):
Current Position: Consultant, Clinical
Lead, Chairman (Medical Division), Senior Lecturer and
Deputy Sub-Dean (BSMS) at Conquest Hospital, Hastings.
Interests and current work: I am the
regional link fellow for the RCP (Edin) and am on the
executive committee of south east regional council and
southern region consultants and specialist committee of BMA.
Having completed an MA in Medical Education from Brighton
University, I am very keen to introduce some of the newly
acquired skills in education and training. I have been
working on a model diabetes prescription chart to reduce
insulin errors nationally. I am also interested in
developing national audits of the use of high strength
insulin preparations.

Russell Drummond (Honorary General
Secretary):
Current Position: Lead consultant in
diabetes and endocrinology within the North Glasgow
Department of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Clinical
Pharmacology.
Interests and current work: Clinically I
have interests in pituitary disease, thyroid disease,
monogenic diabetes, type 1 diabetes and insulin pump
therapy. I am chair of the Greater Glasgow and Clyde Type 1
Diabetes group and an Associate Professor and year director
at the University of Glasgow medical school. Recent research

Alison
Gallagher:
Current Position:
Consultant Diabetologist at the University Hospitals of
Leicester NHS Trust.
Interests and current
work: I am producing a series of ABCD
position statements which focus on controversial areas in
the management of type 2 diabetes. This has included an
ABCD
letter to the BMJ which challenged the purported link
between pioglitazone use and bladder cancer risk as well as a recent
position statement on the risk of
diabetic ketoacidosis associated with the use of SGLT-2
inhibitors.
My interests include patient safety and governance and I led
the Leicester submission to the National Diabetes Mortality
and Morbidity Project which was presented at Diabetes UK in
2016. I also have an interest in insulin therapy, type 1
diabetes and the management of diabetes in pregnancy.

Ian Gallen (Lead on Driving Issues):
Current Position: Consultant physician and
community diabetologists at Royal Berkshire Hospital
Reading.
Interests and current work: I sit on the
Medical panel of the DVLA and liaise with ABCD on driving
matters. I am member of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise
Medicine of RCP London. I have a special interest in helping
diabetic athletes, and in the care of pregnant women with
diabetes.

Stella George (Workforce Co-ordinator):
Current Position: Consultant at East and
North Hertfordshire NHS Trust.
Interests and current work: I am the lead
for inpatient diabetes in our trust and our wonderful team
has won the QiC Diabetes award for our pro-active service. I
am one of the lead authors of the recently published
‘Guideline for the Use of Variable Rate Intravenous Insulin
Infusions in Medical Inpatients’ and look forward to
receiving feedback of its use in real life settings so that
we can continue to improve it. I am also the lead for our
diabetes retinopathy clinics and joint lead for our
transition service. I have been appointed as the next
Workforce Survey Coordinator for Diabetes and Endocrinology
and I am also a regional coordinating sub-dean for the
University of Cambridge students that come to the ‘ southern
hub’ of hospitals for their undergraduate clinical
attachments.

Rob Gregory (Ex Officio Chairman -

Current Position:
Consultant at the
University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.
Interests and current work:
My
sub-specialty interests are diabetes and pregnancy, and
management of patients with diabetes and chronic kidney
disease. I am also the diabetologist on the Leicester
Pancreatic Surgical team that is internationally-renowned
for total pancreatectomy and islet autotransplantation. I
have collaborated with Professor Joan Taylor of De Montfort
University on the development of an implantable artificial
pancreas.

Current Position: Consultant at Barnsley
Hospital.
Interests and current work: I am also an
Honorary Professor of Andrology in the Department of Human
Metabolism the University of Sheffield Medical School,
Sheffield, UK and Hon. Consultant Endocrinologist at the
Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield. I am a clinical and
laboratory researcher into the role of testosterone in the
pathogenesis and treatment of type 2 diabetes and
cardiovascular disease. I have also conducted research on
the hypothalamic and paracrine control of anterior pituitary
hormone secretion, among others. I was elected to the
European Academy of Andrology and am a co-chair of the
testosterone and metabolic disorders group as part of the
International Consultation on Men’s Health and Infertility.

Current Position:

I graduated from
Queen’s University Belfast in 1996 before undertaking
postgraduate training in Belfast and later at the National
Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, USA. My interests
and current work include medical education in my role as an
honorary clinical lecturer at Queen’s University Belfast and
as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh

Dinesh Nagi
(Honorary Chairman):
Current Position: Consultant at the Mid Yorkshire
NHS Trust
Interests and current work: Dinesh has
major interest in service development in diabetes, having
led the development and implementation of the innovative
service redesign of the integrated diabetes model supporting
primary care in Wakefield. His sub-specialty interest,
include insulin pumps and pregnancy. He is also interested
in the role of exercise in the management and prevention of
type 2 diabetes and has edited a book on “exercise and
sports in diabetes”. He is a past member of the RCP Council
representing DUK, ABCD and Society of Endocrinology. He also
led the Diabetes Topic Specific Research Group at WYCLRN and
was clinical Lead and Director of Wakefield and North
Kirklees eye screening programme. He is currently Sepsis and
AKI lead for the Mid Yorkshire NHS trust, having served as a
Clinical Director of Division of Medicine till May 2015.

Current Position: Clinical Research Fellow King’s

Interests and current work: Chair of the
Young Diabetologists and Endocrinologists Forum. Currently
undertaking a PhD supervised by Dr Pratik Choudhary and
Professor Stephanie Amiel focusing on the impact of
hypoglycaemia on the brain particularly in those who have
impaired awareness of hypoglycaemia. Further interests
include the use of diabetes technology in managing

hold a consultant physician position at Royal Free Hospital
in London. Clinical interests include general Endocrinology,

Ana Pokrajac:
Current Position: Consultant at the West Herts
Hospital Trust.
Interests and current work: My main
interest is complex diabetes and I am working to improve
management and the experience of care for patients with
diabetes and chronic kidney disease (CKD). I am a member of
the national guidelines writing group (ABCD–RA) on the
topic. Ever since my research in Endocrinology, I have been
feeling passionate about it. I lead on management of the
Thyroid Eye Disease for the Trust and I am a core member of
Thyroid Cancer MDT. Since 2014, together with colleagues, I
am a member of the organising board for Hertfordshire
Diabetes Meeting that promotes integration of all
stakeholders in diabetes in the county. "In 2015, I was
elected a National Clinical Champion by Diabetes UK."

Gerry Rayman (Co-opted member -

Current Position:
Consultant Physician and Head of
Service at the Diabetes and Endocrine Centre and the
Diabetic Foot Clinic, Ipswich Hospitals NHS Trust.
Interests and current work:
I contribute to
research into complications of diabetes, particularly foot
complications. My interests include the application of new
technologies to diabetes care including glucose sensing and
methodologies in early detection of diabetic neuropathy. I
have also been involved in developing group education
programmes in diabetes including the DESMOND and the
Families, Adolescents and Children’s Teamwork Study
programmes (FACTS; group education for families). I have
introduced and led a number of education initiatives for
SpRs including the Foundation course and the ABCD SpR
meeting. I have been the Clinical Lead for Diabetes
Inpatient Care and foot disease at NHS Diabetes. I was the
innovator and am the lead of the National Diabetes Inpatient
Audit. I am currently Specialist Advisor to Diabetes UK and
immediate past President of the Endocrine and Diabetes Section of the Royal
Society of Medicine. I have contributed to
NICE guidelines on the diabetic foot, CG10, CG119 and NG19.

(Welsh Representative):
Current Position:
Consultant
Physician and Endocrinologist Prince Philip Hospital,
Llanelli, Hywel Dda University Health Board. Honorary Senior
Lecturer, Swansea Clinical School.
Interests and current work:
Much of my recent work
has revolved around the development of new methods of
delivering patient education and support through the use of
modern technology. I have an ongoing medical education role
as the director for academic training at the Wales deanery.
I sit on both the All Wales Diabetes Implementation group
and the National Statutory Advisory Group for Diabetes. I am
the current secretary of the Welsh Endocrine and Diabetes
Society and a theme lead at the Diabetes Research Unit Cymru.
I am also a current Diabetes UK Clinical Champion.

Current Position:
Consultant and
clinical Lead at Royal United Hospitals Foundation Trust Bath.
Interests and current
work: I am the
departmental lead for retinal screening, antenatal care and
research. I have been involved with developing our
departmental database, and our own website. At present we
are negotiating with our three local CCGs a new community
diabetes service. Regionally I have helped to set up a South
West Diabetes in Pregnancy forum and we are organising our
fifth annual meeting at present. I am the Regional Specialty
Advisor for Severn Deanery area and a mentor for the ABCD
mentorship programme.

Current Position:

Interests and current
work: Diversity
seems to be the best aspect of my job as I provide diabetes
care within both the hospital and community setting,
endocrinology and still do G(I)M including “on call”. We are
now into our 3rd year of delivering integrated diabetes
services across 4 hospitals and 4 CCGs. There is large
managerial element too as the clinical director for
Cardiology, Stoke and Site lead. I represent ABCD at NHS
England’s Diabetes in Young People Working Group and at the
RCP Diabetes & Endocrine Specialist Advisory committee.

Bob Ryder (Co-opted member, Website and

Current Position:
Consultant, City Hospital, Birmingham.
Interests and current
work: A current major
interest is community diabetes and a project which won the
QIC best primary and/or community initiative in 2014.
I lead the ABCD endobarrier research studies the 1st of
which now has its
1-year results was featured in a
BBC news item and the 2nd which is endobarrier in diabetes and obstructive
sleep apnoea has also
featured on the BBC. Over the years
special interests have included
photographic screening for
diabetic retinopathy – I undertook
much of the groundwork
behind the current national eye screening programme;
lactic acidosis;
symptoms of ovulation;
diabetic hypoglycaemia unawareness;
diabetic autonomic
neuropathy;
diabetic impotence;
clinical use of IT,
most recently to support Think Glucose;
treating
to target;
relative risks and benefits of pioglitazone
(especially its insufficiently recognised cardio-protective
properties). I run the
ABCD website and lead the
ABCD
nationwide audits of new therapies, most recently
establishing for this purpose an
ABCD presence on N3, the
national broadband network of the NHS. Current and imminent
audits include

dapagliflozin and
insulin degludec. Beyond diabetes I am best known for being principal author
of the best-selling "An Aid to the MRCP Short Cases", the

Academic Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism research in
Hull. My clinical interest in diabetes includes ‘diabesity’.
In endocrinology, my subspecialty interests are reproductive
endocrinology and neuroendocrine tumours. My academic
interests is in understanding the cardiovascular risk in
insulin resistant states including obesity, polycystic ovary
syndrome and type 2 diabetes and modulating these risks with

Dr Patrick Sharp (Ex Officio - Honorary General

Current Position:
Director for
Diabetes Solent NHS Trust.
Interests and current
work: My initial
research work was in the area of diabetes related
complications, but a more mature view is that we should be
working more actively in the earlier part of the pathway,
and certainly in the area of diabetes prevention. As a
consequence, I am currently working on a series of projects
investigating the most efficient screening modalities to
diagnose diabetes and non-diabetic hyperglycaemia in the
community. I am currently working for a community diabetes
provider, and therefore have a keen interest in models of
diabetes care. I am working with CQC in developing markers
of quality for community diabetes providers. In recognition
of the fact that education is a key component of modern
diabetes care, I am engaged in the development of web-based
educational tools for both patients with diabetes and
healthcare professionals who manage people with diabetes.

Alan Sinclair (Lead of ACCEA, Academic

Current Position:
Professor of
Medicine at the University of Bedfordshire and Dean at the
Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Postgraduate Medical School.
Interests and current
work: I have produced
European guidelines on diabetes care for older people
available on
www.instituteofdiabetes.org. I am co-leading a major
EU-funded project on diabetes and frailty (MID-Frail
Project) and leading an NIHR-funded study on medication
errors in care home residents with diabetes. I am the lead
for the Older Peoples Diabetes Network which I jointly
established in 2012 with NHS Diabetes. I am currently
leading a global initiative for the IAGG and have co-chaired
an International Working Group to produce global diabetes
guidance for older people with the IDF. I founded the
Institute of Diabetes for Older People (IDOP) which is now
nationally recognised for its significant outputs in the
area of diabetes in older people.

My interests include type 1 diabetes , insulin pump
therapy, complex care diabetes , community diabetes, new

care, the development of services and the development of
people and I have a variety of research themes linked to
these. The diabetes consultant community has a proud and
vibrant history which ABCD continues to foster. My
contribution is to help in the development of our future
consultants through the National Diabetes Mentorship
Programme and, more latterly, through a widening provision
of other learning resources and opportunities under the ABCD
banner.

Jonathan Valabhji (Co-opted member -

England):
Current Position:
National Clinical
Director for Obesity and Diabetes at NHS England, Consultant
Diabetologist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and
Adjunct Professor at Imperial College London.
Interests and current
work: Professor
Jonathan Valabhji is National Clinical Director for Obesity
and Diabetes at NHS England. He is a Consultant
Diabetologist at St Mary’s Hospital, Imperial College
Healthcare NHS Trust in West London and so remains highly
active at the clinical coalface. The published clinical
outcomes from his Multidisciplinary Diabetic Foot Service at
the Trust are comparable to the best centres
internationally. He is Adjunct Professor at Imperial College
London, with a current research focus on diabetic foot
disease as well as on diabetes population level health, and
past publications on cardiovascular disease in diabetes. As
National Clinical Director, he is currently providing
clinical leadership around a number of national initiatives,
including the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme, a
collaboration between NHS England, Public Health England and
Diabetes UK that aims to cause England to be the first
country to implement at scale a national evidence-based Type
2 diabetes prevention programme.

Chris Walton (Ex Officio chairman -
2011 - 2014):
Current Position:
Consultant at
Hull, Clinical Network Diabetes Lead, Yorkshire and Humber
Interests and current
work: I work mostly on the community interface and
I chair the local diabetes network board. I recently gave up
my local role in the retinal screening service and replaced
it with the role of the Yorkshire/Humber clinical network
(CN) lead for diabetes where I have a particular interest in
promoting structured education and the adoption of new
technologies. For the past 10 years I have been an officer
of ABCD as Treasurer , then Chair and ex-officio Chair. As
Chair of Association I was involved in ABCD taking over the
British Journal of Diabetes & Vascular Disease (BJDVD) from
SAGE. I continue to be active in the work of the Association
and developing BJDVD which is now renamed
as the British Journal of Diabetes. I believe that
the journal can help further the role of UK diabetologists
in developing clinical research and provide a platform for a
host of educational opportunities.

Emma Wilmot (Chair, ABCD
Insulin Pump Network UK):
Current Position: Consultant
Diabetologist, Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
Interests and current work:
I am the national chair of the IPN-UK
and lead the delivery of a number of educational events
related to insulin pump therapy and diabetes technologies. I
lead the Derby Insulin Pump Service and my specialist
interests include Type 1 diabetes, transition and young
adults and antenatal diabetes care. I completed my PhD in
2013 on the topic of 'Type 2 diabetes in younger adults' and
I continue to work with the Strategic Clinical Network and
others on this as an area of high priority in the East
Midlands. |

Current Position:
Consultant and CD East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust.
Interests and current
work: Currently
I am co-ordinating joint ABCD-Renal Association guidelines
on diabetic nephropathy. I was the diabetes lead in the
published JBS3 guidelines on CVD prevention. I have been
elected RCPL CHAIRMAN of the Joint Speciality Committee in
Diabetes and Endocrinology and ABCD Lead on Transitional
Diabetes Care.
